Hua Hin

Hua Hin

HUA HIN

Hua Hin, the oldest resort town in Thailand, has, unlike many other areas, managed to combine modern features with the charm of a continuously active fishing port.

Hua Hin started its existence in 1920 when Rama VI and Rama VII built their summer residences here to escape Bangkok’s heat. The most famous of these palaces is Phra Klai Kangwon Ratchawang which translated into English means something like “Far from Worries.” The town then became popular with the nobility and wealthy Thais from Bangkok who built villas by the sea. When a 200km railway between Bangkok and Hua Hin was built, more visitors started flocking to the seaside town.

Every year, Hua Hin welcomes at least as many Thai tourists as foreigners.

Hua Hin Today
You will find a host of international hotels and restaurants in Hua Hin and the city has also become a popular choice for many expats who have bought or rented apartments in and around the city. Many retirees have also chosen this spot to live, as prices for homes remains extremely cheap.

On weekends, both Thais and expats living in Bangkok head over to Hua Hin, causing some of the city’s streets to resemble Sukhumvit on a Friday night, so nightlife enthusiasts will feel quite at home. As Hua Hin is under royal protection, you will not find adult entertainment here. The city is perfect for family friendly holidays.

Hua Hin has a 7 km long white sandy beach where you can participate in the water activity of your choice, as well as rent horses and go for a ride along the beach. In addition, Hua Hin is famous for its many small seafood restaurants situated on the beach, where you can order a feast quite cheaply while watching the sunset.

Hua Hin is a departure point for tropical island expeditions, such as Koh Talu. The area also offers some of the best golf in Thailand, beautiful Buddhist temples, traditional markets, music festivals and stunning scenery. In short, Hua Hin offers something for everyone and is the perfect holiday destination for people of all ages.

There are many dining options in the Hua Hin area serving thai, French, Western, Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Danish and Japanese food. Hua Hin is very inexpensive, although prices can vary from as little as 20 baht for street food to more than + 4,000 baht for delicacies at the upscale restaurants. Dining by the sea is not a luxury but more of a common feat for every one coming to Hua Hin. Be sure to taste Tom Yum Gung; the spicy and sour prawn soup is considered Thailand's national dish. In addition, all of the hotels have bars and lobby lounges, many featuring live entertainment, like in coco 51 and the internationals hotels like the old Sofitel, today known as Centara Grand Beach Hotel.

A useful dining tip for those not too fond of spicy food, (mai ped) meaning not too hot, will ensure a non eye-watering dish finds its way to your table. Thai food is of course very tasty, eaten both on the street and in seated restaurants. One of Thailand's great lifestyle feats is the cost-effective and delicious street food. Vendors are littered around Hua Hin, and you may even end up enjoying your most memorable Thai dish served up from a simple food cart.
